Purpose: To investigate the effect of blocking blue light, using two types of lenses, on A2E photooxidation induced by smartphones, which are known to cause age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Methods: Photooxidation of A2E, a synthetic product of two molecules of all-trans-retinal and ethanolamine, was induced by exposure to smartphone light for 3 hours. Three different lenses, comprising both tinted and coated lenses, designed to block blue light were then used to evaluate their inhibitory effect on A2E photooxidation during equal exposure to smartphone light. A2E photooxidation was evaluated by measuring the absorbance of residual A2E after exposure to smartphone light.
Results: Photooxidation of A2E by exposure to smartphone irradiation was 36.78¡¾2.19%. The three different tinted lenses resulted in a reduction of 9.92%, 11.19%, and 11.30%, respectively, in A2E photooxidation. The three different coated lenses resulted in a reduction of 7.85%, 7.71%, and 7.42%, respectively, in A2E photooxidation. The photooxidation of A2E and iso-A2E by exposure to smartphone irradiation and suppression of photooxidation by blue light blocking lenses was found to increase with increase in the exposure time, respectively.
Conclusions: In this study, blue light blocking lenses were confirmed to have an inhibitory effect on the photooxidation of A2E, with a slight advantage for tinted versus coated lenses.
